Process Paper

How I chose my topic:

I chose my topic because I was interested in something other than American history.  I have taken German since the 4th grade and wanted to learn more about Germany and how it came to be.  The unification of Germany interested me and I thought it went well with the theme.

How I conducted my research:

I used the Chamblee Middle School website to find research sources.  I visited the school library frequently to conduct research and gather facts.  I conducted research on the Internet at home and used many different sources to validate my findings.  I recorded my findings on notecards and presented my findings for review and feedback from my teacher.

How I selected my presentation category and created my project:

Many people were not building a website and I wanted to do something different.  I know that you can do many things with technology and I felt this would be a good presentation medium for my project.  To build the website I chose www.wix.com.  Wix.com has an easy to learn interface and allows me to build the site the way I wanted.

How my project relates to the NHD theme:

The Germany that we know today was once only a collection of over 200 separate states only held together by a common language.  Many states were dominated by rivals Austria and Prussia and owed their allegiance to their local rulers.  Conflicts arose between the states for many reasons included trade, territory, or political allegiance.  Smaller states were dominated by larger states and all the states were susceptible to attack by foreign forces due to their lack of unity.  Otto von Bismarck was a cunning and skilled politician who used his diplomatic skills and military force to unite the Germanic states into a unified Germany.  The new country would  dominate Europe and help start the great world wars of the 20th century.
