Otto von Bismarck was a skilled and forceful politician who serverd as  Chancellor of the German Empire between 1871 and 1890.  He is credited with uniting the many German states into the German Empire and brought massive social and political reforms to the new Empire.  He was a forceful leader who used violence and war to unite the Germanic states, hence earning him the nickname of "The Iron Chancellor".
